Technology

In the 21st century, computers and other technological resources are as integral to learning as pencil and paper.

Have you ever heard of the “Digital Divide” or the “Global Digital Divide”? It is the gap between people who have access to technology (computers, cell phones, and internet) and those who do not. As a result there is a social and economic inequality. In 2011 we had our first experience working with students and teachers, living in Uganda, who do not have access to technology. We learned a lot from this experience taking with us the vision to perform a similar work in Naivasha, Kenya. Currently we provide college students, teachers, and educational administrators with computer training and laptops. One thing we know from experience is you have to make sure the teachers are comfortable using a computer and projector before you provide the school with a computer lab. In the near future we plan to build a Learning Center equipped with the latest reading materials, technology and educational resources to bring the world and all it has to offer to their finger tips. The Learning Center is designed to serve the students, their families and the local community. The goals for the Learning Center are to:

  • Support the current classroom instruction with additional educational resources
  • Teach students how to use the computer along with popular software applications
  • Support after school programs
  • Provide adult education in the evenings
  • Provide computer and job training to local business

How has the computer training center helped you and how do you use the knowledge you have gained in your daily life?

I started learning computer studies in my Senior Two Class after the launching of the Computer Training Center in our school. Initially our Teacher started with teaching us the different parts of the computer and their usage. Later I learned how to use Microsoft Office. So now I can draft documents in Microsoft Word, Manipulate Calculations in Excel and Create Database in Access. I also learnt how to use the internet, last year I got my first email and now I use it to communicate with my friends in other schools far away. Lately I have been studying about South African History on the internet because we don’t have many books for research at school the internet has given me and my friends an advantage to access latest’s information for research and keep ahead of our fellow students who don’t know how to use the computer. The Encyclopedia offer instant information almost about anything. I want to learn graphics and website designing in my senior four holidays and when I go to University I would love to do computer Science.

How has the computer training center helped you and how do you use the knowledge you have gained in your daily life?

When I came here to Nyakanyoniy Girls School (NG School) in Senior one the first teacher I met told us that we were going for computer lessons, I was very excited because I had never seen a computer. I was looking forward to see how it looks and how it works. Now I have learned how to use Microsoft Word to Draft letters, Microsoft Publisher to design greeting cards and last School term I signed up on Yahoo Mail to get my self an email. When I report for School in February I will be learning more on how to use the internet but for now at least I can write emails to my friends and do research. When am at school I use the internet to Google for information about my subjects because usually the information online is very illustrative that you understand even better than reading the old books in our library. I am yet to learn Microsoft Excel and Access in next school term. I feel great to have the opportunity to learn and use computer because not many of my friends in the village where I come from know how it use it. Actually many have never seen a computer including my dad and Mom so am grateful for this great opportunity God blesses you.

How has the computer training center helped you and how do you use the knowledge you have gained in your daily life

Because I love music I wanted to learn something that would help me be better at music so I leant how to use fruity loops to produce music instrumental tracks. Now am a music producer in Jinja Town working with music studio.  While at Kiira High I also learnt Microsoft Office though learning how to use fruity loops to create music is the best things I got from the computer training center. Am grateful for the opportunity they gave me to learn computer skills. Now I don’t have to look for a job because I can do by my self with producing music for musicians in town and earn a living out of it.
